"Shakespeare is Alive and Well in Dorchester" is Still Going Strong

The “Shakespeare is Alive and Well in Dorchester” program is held in collaboration with the Boston Public Schools as an after-school art and theater program. Students from five area schools are participating this year, with more expected to join us in 2008. The O'Hearn Elementary School, The Harbor Middle School, The Murphy School (K-8), the Lucy Stone Elementary School, and the Chittick Elementary School. This program provides Dorchester students with the opportunity to deepen and broaden their understanding of the world through the study of art and the works of William Shakespeare. Students use the works of Shakespeare to help shape and focus their ideas about their world using painting, costume design, puppetry, set design and print materials. We are collaborating with the Actors' Shakespeare Project. This semester children are learning about William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Giant Puppets on Display

Currently on exhibition at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center are the Giant Opera Puppets Dot Art students created for First Night 2003. The puppets are from "When Opera Worlds Collide" which was performed at the Cloud Place in Copley Square, Boston.

Professional opera singers performed the student's script (which incorporated several arias from well known operas) from the fourth story of the building as the students controlled the puppet’s movements from the sidewalk below. Go check them out!

Friends of Dot Art Annual Fund

This past spring of 06 we kicked off the Annual Fund with a Matching Challenge grant of $10,000 from the Amelia Peabody Foundation.  With the generous support of the Dorchester community, we successfully reached our goal!  Yet, we still have a long way to go. Please help us keep visual arts alive in Dorchester and become a friend of Dot Art.
